MAKING SPACE IN OUR HEADS

MAKING SPACE IN OUR HEADS

As long as you’re living in a fast-paced society, you will be swamped or sometimes drown by “information”. The info from the site we browse, the various Social Media platforms, video streaming sites and etc all made available and accessible via our mobile devices.

Often times, our smartphone is the first thing we touch the second we wake up or before going to bed. Just take a moment to think, we are constantly feeding our minds with information and being conformed to all the user-generated contents available online…and it never stops!

If we could just get inside our heads, I can only imagine how cluttered (mind-full) it will be. That’s exactly how I’ve been feeling until couple months back I decided to explore, MEDITATION. Whenever it comes to the subject of meditation, we have a misconception that it will be some spiritual practice or techniques to emptying our minds. That’s how I used to think!

HOW I STARTED?

I discovered the benefits of it after attending a “Movement Class” conducted by a fitness & yoga instructor Hansen Lee and at the end of the class, he got us doing a 10 Minutes routine where we simply focus on our breathing and being mindful of our thoughts and surroundings. That 10 Minutes was life-changing for me. It got me curious of the impact if I were to do this on a daily basis. So, my journey begun from there.

WHAT IS BEING MINDFUL?  (VS BEING MIND-FULL)

Mindfulness is the basic human ability to be fully present, aware of where we are and what we’re doing, and not overly reactive or overwhelmed by what’s going on around us. It is definitely not emptying our minds or ignore our surroundings and emotions!

Whenever you bring awareness to what you’re directly experiencing via your senses, or to your state of mind via your thoughts and emotions, you’re being mindful. And there’s growing research showing that when you train your brain to be mindful, you’re actually remodeling the physical structure of your brain. THAT’S POWERFUL!

5 STEPS TO BEGIN YOUR MINDFULNESS PRACTICE

Now, as much as there are tools, apps and other more advance techniques. I strongly suggest any new adopters to start by doing Mindful Breathing

This exercise can be done standing up or sitting down, and pretty much anywhere at any time

Either way, all you have to do is be still and focus on your breath for just one minute.

  1. Start by breathing in and out slowly. One breath cycle should last for approximately 6 seconds.

  2. Breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth, letting your breath flow effortlessly in and out of your body.

  3. Let go of your thoughts. Let go of things you have to do later today or pending projects that need your attention. Simply let thoughts rise and fall of their own accord and be at one with your breath.

  4. Purposefully watch your breath, focusing your sense of awareness on its pathway as it enters your body and fills you with life.

  5. Then watch with your awareness as it works its way up and out of your mouth and its energy dissipates into the world.

It is OK, if you’re distracted by a thought, just gently bring your focus back to your breathing whenever that happens. If you find a little bit of music helps better, you can use “DELTA WAVES” Playlist on SPOTIFY.

I am looking forward to hear about your experience and how mindfulness practice have changed your life. Feel free to get in touch by commenting or write to me.
